Willem Strydom House (1.5km from De Lande Guest House and 8km from the main Papkuilsfontein Farm).

This very old house is part of the historic Matjiesfontein 'werf' a group of thatch and sandstone buildings evocative of Nieuwoudtville's unique architectural heritage and the idiosyncratic social structures of the late 18th and early 19th century. Willem Strydom house belonged to the artist and marble sculptor, Willem Strydom, where he worked for the past 20 years since moving from Pretoria when he was commissioned to do a huge Namaqua marble sculpture, and fell in love with the open spaces and remoteness of this area.

The H-form, and recently newly thatched house, faces east with lounge and two bedrooms on the eastern side, one of which was his "tekenkamer" where he painted the most wonderful watercolours. (His studio where some of his marble work still can be seen, is a short distance from his house). The ceiling of the one bedroom , Willem's tekenkamer", has been changed to accommodate a glass panel high up in the gable, a beautiful addition with extra light streaming into the room. This room has been made into a bedroom with two ¾ beds in it. The other room has a double bed.

The two bedrooms lead out of the "voorkamer" (lounge) on opposite sides of it. Out of the lounge is the dining room, out of that the kitchen and next to the kitchen, the bathroom, which could be a bit awkward, but trusting that you will be able to live with it. The bathroom has a lovely shower, heated towel rail, wall heater and bidet. Both bathroom and kitchen floors have baked clay tiles. The kitchen is fully equipped to be self catering with 5 burner gas top and electric oven and most things you may need, coffee plunger and perculator.
